The most popular podcast application for Windows Phone, ‘PODCASTS!’, has recently been released in the Windows 8 store, where it can be downloaded free of charge.  ‘PODCASTS!’ allows you to stream audio and video podcasts, subscribe to podcasts, download episodes for playback when you’re not on the app and search for podcasts efficiently and easily.  Furthermore, the app fully supports rotation and snapped modes and background audio playback is fully integrated with the Windows 8 system audio controls.  Best of all, it doesn’t cost a  penny.  With Xbox Music not really offering support for podcasts, either on Windows 8 or Windows Phone, this app is essential, and all it needs really is to find a way of synchronizing play position with Windows Phones also. Find the app in the Windows 8 Store here. ...

In a blog post Microsoft announced that they have started accepting  games with a rating of PEGI 18. The first two games to be offered will be The Witcher, by CD Projekt, and Grand Theft Auto IV, by Take Two—with more games coming soon. Unfortunately both games are Desktop, not Windows 8-style titles. Minors will remain protected by the integration with the Windows 8 store of Microsoft Family Safety, which help parents control the kinds of apps their children can install. Microsoft emphasized that due to this the Store continues to be a safe and positive place for children to explore. Read more at Microsoft here. ...

The Windows 8 Store is one of the fastest growing app stores, but one of the reasons behind this is an issue which the Windows Phone marketplace had long struggled with – Developers publishing hundreds of spam applications which are often simply RSS readers for specific websites with only the name and the feed changed. This issue is well illustrated by Win App Update, who note only 12% of developers are responsible for 61% of the apps in the app store, giving an average of more than 16 apps each for developers who have more than 5 apps in the store. Of course an argument can be made that the best applications will still float to the top, and that at this early stage quantity is more important than quality, at least until we get to 6 figures, but it does take some of the shine of the growth in ...

Microsoft has already revealed some interesting Windows 8 news this week, including that they have already sold 40 million licenses of the new OS. Now Steve Ballmer in a Microsoft Share Holder Meeting has revealed that Windows 8 buyers " … are using the features and downloading new applications. In fact, several apps have reached already 1 million downloads." The news is significant, as it indicates that Windows 8 users are doing more than simply making use of their old desktop apps, but are actively using the Metro environment and its associated store, which should draw in new developers and applications. He also confirmed that “new devices will really start to hit the shelves worldwide in the coming weeks and coming months", which is good news for those frustrated by the lack of exciting windows 8 devices on shelves. Betanews reports that the Windows 8 store’s app protection has been well and truly cracked, allowing even novice users to make trial apps free full versions with only a click of a button. The hack called Wsservice_crk was released on October 30, 2012 on the My Digital Life forum and allows users to crack Windows Store applications, sideload unsigned apps so that they can be run on Windows 8 Metro and the means to create app packages that can be further redistributed. Like all cracking software it does of course leave the user at the mercy of the original hacker, and with system files being modified does not just leave a PC potentially less stable, but also in a state where it can not really be trusted for anything important. The hack also prevents apps from being updated, but there is a onerous work-around for this. Of course with nearly ...

Speaking at the London Games Conference 2012 Microsoft’s marketing lead  Andrew Webber  has revealed that there are currently only 1,421 games in the Windows 8 Store. Noting that there were only 13 games in the Racing category, he called it a great opportunity for developers to take advantage of the digital store while numbers were low. These numbers are set to rise soon, but the apps released in the early stage will not have any problem trying to compete for attention. At present it is estimated that there is more than 20,000 apps in the Windows 8 Store, according to store watcher Win App Update. Today’s totals: 20,610 apps worldwide in the Windows Store (broke 20,000 on Tuesday, I believe). 17,958 of those are free (87%). — Win App Update (@WinAppUpdate) November 22, 2012 Via Develop-online.net ...

The Windows 8 store has continued to grow apace, adding 3000 apps in the last 8 days, according to WinAppUpdate. The total is a worldwide number, with individual markets varying in quantity. The Chinese market in particular is very robust, with more than 10,000 aps at present. It is the largest market, but unfortunately it is suspected not the one with the highest quality of apps. At this rate the store should hit 20,000 apps before December, and will hopefully include more big-name apps by then. ...

Windows 8 developer and Microsoft employee Kevin Ashley has posted another Windows 8 success story, aptly illustrated by the Downloads graph from his app Card Games Chest, which is close to 100,000 downloads and is seeing 2000-3000 downloads per day. Prior to the full release of Windows 8 he was seeing around 300-400 downloads per day.  His app is monetized by ads and in-app purchases, and he notes they are happily keeping him in lunch and supper. He also used the demographics of the people who downloaded to debunk some Windows 8 myths. The first shows that plenty of people over 55 are downloading his app, demonstrating the myth that older Windows 8 users will not be able to get to grips with the changes in the OS is nonsense. The second graph, which is of people who use in-app purchases in the app, also shows that these over 55 ...

The Windows 8 Store is growing apace, with WinAppUpdate declaring that yesterday there was 12,895 apps in the store, and presumably more than 13,000 today. The store is currently growing at around 362 apps per day, a bit slower than a week ago, when it was closer to 500 per day, but this may have been the BUILD effect, with developers polishing their apps with the latest advice. New apps include a Slacker App for Windows 8 and the Shazam app amongst the latest entrants. Hopefully the slow-down is just transient, as what the store really needs is an acceleration to reach a respectable 6 figure number as soon as possible. Hopefully recent success stories such as 100,000 downloads by Metrotwit and 200,000 by ARMED will serve to do just that. Via TNW. ...

Windows Phone 8 has the ability to let a Guest account use your apps using the Kids Corner feature. It turns out Windows 8/Windows RT, including the Surface, has the same ability, allowing you to set up an account for your kids and install only selected apps onto their account. To install apps you purchased on other accounts on your tablet: 1. Log into your second account on your device. 2. Open up the Store. 3. Open up Settings. 4. Click on Your Account. 5. Click on Change user. 6. Log in with a Microsoft account that has already purchased apps from the store. 7. Swipe down from the top and select Your Apps. 8. Select an install any of the apps that you had already purchased with that account. Don’t worry, it doesn’t download the apps again, so it doesn’t take up any more space. Our tipster, Mr. Brown, ...

The Next Web notes, via WinAppUpdate, that there are now more than 10,000 apps in the Windows 8 store, being added at a rate of 500 per day. This rate is likely to increase exponentially as the number of Windows 8 PCs, already expected to be more than 4 million in number, rapidly increases over the next few weeks, and developers see more opportunities. Microsoft has also announced at BUILD that the official replacement for Metro-style apps will be ‘Windows 8 Store Applications’ which is a rather typically uncool but descriptive Microsoft nomenclature. Has any actually cool applications hit the Windows 8 store recently? Let us know below. ...
