Microsoft today posted a new video talking about the design of Surface. The Surface for Windows RT sports a great build quality which provides you a feel of a high end of watch finish. Also the Surface was designed to withstand drop in 72 different orientations! Yes, Microsoft even demoed that part in its launch keynote few days back. The Surface also features a built-in kickstand, two cameras which can enable you to take notes and record a lecture at the same time. Have you bought your Surface? ...

I took the plunge and upgraded by production laptop to Windows 8 last night, and I thought I would share my first hand experiences. My laptop is an HP Pavilion DV6 Core i5 with 6 GB of RAM and a 512 GB hard drive with a 1366×768 screen. It is less than one year old. It does not have a touch screen. What I did not expect however was that my HP Photosmart wireless network printer would not work either, or that the laptop would have power management issues and be unable to sleep. First, the purchase experience was not as smooth as I hoped.  I ran the compatibility app, which took a rather long time to tell my eventually that  Microsoft Security Essentials, HP Digital Persona and the Windows Phone emulator will not work. The first was no real loss, as Windows Defender took over the role.  This was ...

Windows 8 is likely being installed in its millions all over the world, and some cool announced features are already popping up. One of them is Xbox Music, which it appears is already scanning libraries and matching them up with Microsoft’s library of 30 million songs. Presumable if a user were to roam on another PC they will be able to stream their “matched” music library on the other device also, and for example also from an Xbox 360. Other statuses include Unmatched (available only here) Matched (available here and in the XBOX Music Cloud for streaming to other devices. Streaming Only (download here to listen offline) The service so far does not seem to require a paid music pass, but then a number of hours of free streaming is included with very Windows 8 purchase. Thanks Charles for the tip. ...

Today many Microsoft Surface buyers will be angered, not by the device but by its absence, as many international pre-orders end up being pushed back around the world. According to readers Microsoft is now revising the language of the pre-orders, saying delivery would be *from* the 26th, and that devices could arrive as late as the 30th October. Clearly the whole point of the pre-order system was to have the device arrive day and date with its release to the market, and while I do not expect riots in the streets, I think more than a few digital recycle bins will be tipped over. If there is any good news, it is that some Microsoft reps have said the delays were due to “huge demand” which is never a bad thing. To check where your Surface order currently is, use this handy tip from WPC. Just go to the FedEx ...

Forget double-sided tiles.  Microsoft thinks Windows 8 users should be able to twist and turn their tiles in up to 3 dimensions, and even have cylindrical tiles. In their patent the sides of the boxes could show more information about notifications, such as the subject line of a newly received email or a full text messages. The several sides of the boxes would allow more information to be shows. The rotating tiles can also be used to reveal menus e.g for a music controls. The patents were filed in Q2 2012 and granted in Q3 2012, so may show up in some future version of Windows. Read more detail at Patentbolt.com Thanks V4X22ndNov for the tip. ...

As midnight rolls over the world, it is now the 26th in New Zealand, and some stores there are holding midnight openings for  Windows 8. Neowin reports little consumer enthusiasm so far, with only one or two customers showing up in the store they visited. One person who was certainly enthusiastic is Greg Daniel, who was officially the first person in the world to buy a copy of the new OS. While Microsoft is rumoured to be planning to spend more than $ 1.5 billion promoting the OS, there has been very little advertising in the run up to the release surprisingly, likely explaining the muted response so far. Update: In a related story, Australians seems to be showing more enthusiasm, seemingly filling the Harvey Norman Store waiting in line for their Windows 8 retail copies. CNET has pictures of what will likely be the first buyer of a Microsoft Surface tablet in the world. Chen Shi has started queuing at the Beijing Suning, the retail chain that will be selling the surface in China. Due to time zones they will be the first to officially start selling the tablet on the 26th. From the look of the stiles behind him Microsoft expects even bigger crowds to appear eventually. Microsoft has also started shipping the tablet to those who pre-ordered online, but there is growing concern that even those who ordered early will not be getting it on the big day, making Shi’s strategy not that mad after all. We have had a tip from a reader that their pre-order for the Microsoft Surface Touch Cover has been cancelled in Canada. Apparently others buyers have been similarly affected. Of course one possibility is that the supply may be severely over subscribed, but Microsoft has also told the angry punters that a system error may be to blame. Have any of our other readers been affected? Let us know below. Thanks Jed for the tip. ...
