Andy wrote us complaining: I pre-ordered the 64GB Surface minutes after it went on sale in Canada, and I just got an email notification from Microsoft saying my order will not ship until November 2nd. I’m wondering if I’m the only one, or if all 64GB models have been delayed, or if Microsoft is screwing customers outside the US to fulfil US orders. Might be worth looking into. It turns out he was one of many who received such emails, saying their Surface tablet orders would no longer be delivered on the 26th October. Now Microsoft has admitted that these emails have been sent in error to non-US buyers, telling Engadget: Unfortunately, an incorrect email was sent to several of our international customers who pre-ordered Surface from the Microsoft Online Store in the past week. All customers should expect their devices by the original date given when orders were placed. ...

Wired posted the above picture, showing the wide range of Windows 8 hybrid tablets/laptops which will be hitting the market shortly. While there is a lot of trepidation about the reception Windows 8 will have in in the market, it does enable a wide variety of new form factors which may boost the moribund laptop market. “I do believe the convertibles have the ability to draw consumer attention,” IHS iSuppli analyst Craig Stice says. “The question of course will boil down to price with these new convertibles and how competitive they will be able to be versus the tablet.” Companies likeHP, Dell, Lenovo, Sony, Acer, Samsung, Toshiba, and Asus have all started pushing into this new category of convertible devices, with devices ranging in price for $700 to $1600, with the majority priced similar to an ultrabook. “Hybrid devices will not drive the overall growth [of the PC market] ...

Good news for Microsoft and Windows RT fans is that the 32 GB Windows RT has now sold out also in Canada and UK. The 32 GB device has also proven to be popular in USA, where it sold out in less than 24 hours. We generally expected that the 32 GB device was selling out because it is the cheapest, but an alternate theory also actually makes a lot of sense – the bundles only include a Black Touch Cover, a colour I suspect few people would chose, suggesting many people are paying the $20 premium to get the actual colour of their choice or even the Type Cover, rather than settling for the bundled “freebie”. The Surface team posted the above video of a 30 inch drop test of a Surface tablet onto a hardwood floor. It is no surprise the Vapor Magnesium ensconced device survived the fall. More interesting however is that the video was captured by the Surface camera, and looks pretty good, even in 1080P HD. The device is now on pre-order, and appears so far to be selling well, with rumours that Microsoft is looking to sell 3-5 million over the next 3 months. Via MobilityDigest.com ...

Windows 8 is a major transition in the look and feel of Windows but Ubuntu’s desperate call for desktop users to upgrade to their OS to “Avoid the pain of Windows 8” rings rather hollow when one bears in mind that for desktop upgraders, Windows 8 will still run all their old apps, while Ubuntu’s poor clone of Windows XP will not. Of course the fact that Steam is trying to move their gaming empire to Linux does mean Microsoft should not completely ignore the threat, but I think just the idea that Windows users will move in droves to Linux is so embarrassing that Ubuntu has already changed the slogan on their web page back to “Your wish is our command”. Do our readers think Microsoft should be worried? Let us know below. Thanks Filipe for the tip. Screen shot Softpedia.com ...

Morgan Stanley’s Adam Holt released a research note on the Microsoft Surface where he suggested Microsoft will be selling 3 million of the tablets, which are priced to be competitive with the Apple iPad, in the last 3 months of the year. He also expects Microsoft to sell 9 million devices in 2013, saying the device is “an underappreciated driver for Windows revenue in FY13 and beyond.” “Pricing appears competitive: $499 for a 32 GB Surface is less than the $599 for a new 32 GB iPad with WiFi, while $699 for a 64 GB Surface plus keyboard is consistent with the $699 cost of a 64 GB iPad, with no keyboard-and MSFT’s flat keyboard is itself a differentiator. The $599 Surface bundle (32 GB tablet + keyboard) costs the same as a 32 GB iPad, but > 50% of iPad users also purchase an iPad cover (~$50 at retail) ...
