You may recall some months back we reported on VLC’s kickstarter to raise $75,000 in an effort to create a free Metro Win8 App. The project has been behind schedule and we reported on their progress in June. In October the team finally got the video portion of the app working, but not the audio. Later they finished the audio implementation and submitted it for certification from Microsoft. Unfortunately, it was rejected by Microsoft due to audio crashing issue. VideoLan team is now working on to fix the audio related issue and they are expected to re-submit the app sometime next week. Mean while, VideoLAN President Jean-Baptiste Kempf sent these screenshots to Neowin to show off their new UI they have been working on in the past weeks. As you can see, the UI looks almost similar to Zune Desktop. One more screenshot from VLC, Source: Neowin ...

More importantly, he brings back the Start Menu in his concept. Yesterday, Paul Thurrott reported that Microsoft is planning to bring back Start Menu is the upcoming update for Windows 8. This move from Microsoft is targeted towards power users who use keyboards and mice. It would be similar to the current Windows 7 Start Screen allowing users to access their apps, folders, etc,. Maary Jo Foley today confirmed that Start Menu is coming back and it is internally known as “mini-Start”. Since Thurrott’s initial December 10 report on the return of the Start Menu, I’ve heard from my own contacts that this is highly likely to happen. Microsoft is, indeed, highly likely to bring back Start Menu. Supposedly it’s being called internally “mini-Start,” (as it won’t be a full-screen Start Menu like in Windows 8), one of my contacts said. Are you really looking forward to this upcoming Start Menu?    Microsoft is getting aggressive with their marketing these days and I highly appreciate their move. When you have better product than the competition and consumers are still buying the competitors crappy ones, you got to teach them the right thing and Microsoft is trying to do it. In the recently published ad on YouTube, Ben the PC Guy hits the streets of Venice, CA asking people which they would rather have — a Chromebook or a Windows laptop. The ad highlights the lack of real apps on Chromebook and their mandatory online nature making them effectively useless most of the time. The ad ends with Asus Windows 8 hybrid that offers great value and experience for almost same price. What do you think of this ad? ...
