The special post includes words from Microsoft’s top executives on Steve Ballmer, Steve Ballmer himself talking about his work and a look at the legacy Steve Ballmer leaves on Microsoft. It revealed few interesting information on Steve Ballmer, here are some of them. Steve Ballmer was largely responsible for settling all the anti-trust issues Microsoft faced in the 1990s. When Ballmer took over as CEO, Microsoft was in the midst of fighting a bitter antitrust complaint brought against the company in 1998 by the U.S. government and 20 states. For several years, Gates’ attitude suggested that he would rather fight the claims than settle; upon replacing Gates, Ballmer made it a top priority for the company to put the cases behind it as quickly as possible. Less than two years after opening a game design studio in downtown Victoria, Canada. This was an initiative led personally by Don Mattrick who had previously lived in Victoria, Canada.  Microsoft has closed its doors, leaving at least 30 people out of work. The Redmond based software giant said it was part of a plan to consolidate its resources. “This was not an easy decision, but one guided by our desire to centralize development in our Vancouver studios,” the company said. “We are working closely with all employees affected by this change to identify open positions in other studios, and we remain committed to doing business in British Columbia.” “It was great to have a large, well-known brand like Microsoft come to town and we’re sorry to see them go, but in the end it wasn’t a giant studio,” said Dan Gunn, executive director of the Victoria Advanced Technology Council. “Fortunately, we have seen ...

The limited availability of the PS4 in North America helped the Xbox dominate console sales over Black Friday.   Market Research Firm InfoScout collected over 83,000 receipts from 3,000 people who shopped at Walmart and Target on Black Friday.  Analysis of that date shows the Xbox One with 31% of console sales, the Xbox 360 with 30% of sales, PS4 & PS3 with 15% each, and the Wii & Wii U with a combined 7%. These numbers may be an early indication of how the Christmas shopping season may go.  Walmart offered the Xbox 360 for $99, and in these tough economic times I think that’s of great value to families. Infoscout also released some quotes of what they were hearing from consumers: PlayStation 4 “Too much hype when Sony doesn’t produce enough” “Expensive. Games are expensive.” “It’s too high tech none if the older ps games will work with it ...

According to the report from research firm IHS, Microsoft’s Xbox One costs $471 to build. Microsoft is now selling the console for $499, which leaves very less margin up front when the console is sold. Microsoft expects to earn more money via selling games and services in the future. In comparison, Sony’s PS4 costs $381 to build and it is being sold for $399 in the market. Microsoft’s inclusion of Kinect sensor which costs $75 is the main reason for Xbox One to cost more than Sony PS4.   Rick Sherlund, an analyst with Nomura Securities, has estimated that Microsoft is likely to lose as much as $1 billion this year on the Xbox One, after accounting for research and development plus sales and marketing costs. Typically with videogame systems such as this, the cost of the components does come down, and newer and less-costly components get swapped in over the ...

Ifixit today posted their Microsoft Xbox One tear down just few hours after its launch. Xbox One scored a repairability score of 8 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair). I think 8 of 10 is a number which should surprise everyone given the recent repairability scores of Surface devices from Microsoft. Ifixit posted their experience as below, Only a few tools are required to take the whole console apart. The opening procedure is similar to, but much easier than, any Xbox 360. Once inside, a clean, no-nonsense modular design allows the drives, fan, heat sink, wireless board, and front daughterboard to be easily replaced. Clips instead of screws make opening the case more difficult than necessary, but the absence of adhesive and proprietary screws helps soften the transgression. The hard drive is relatively difficult to access; you’ll have to void the warranty if you’d like to upgrade/replace it. Source: Ifixit ...
