The latest Xbox 360 Dashboard update, which has been in beta for some time, is now rolling out to console owners. The star feature of the update is the arrival of IE9 on Xbox 360.  This enables users to browse the web from the couch, controlling the experience using Xbox Smart Glass from their favourite smartphone or tablet.  This app is expected to hit the market on the 26th, with the release of Windows 8 also. Unfortunately one needs an Xbox Live Gold member ship to gain access to the browser, a negative for those who mainly use the Xbox 360 as a media device. The full feature list for the update include: Refreshed Xbox 360 Dashboard. We’ve updated the UI with a few things, including an updated layout with more tiles, a combined TV & Movies channel and, in the US, a Sports destination. Internet Explorer for Xbox. With ...

Microsoft has purchased a number of Xbox related domain names recently, including XboxPhone.com, XboxTablet.com, XboxLiveTV.com and XboxCompanion.com.  Two however rang a particular bell. Microsoft also purchased Xbox8.us and Xbox8.org, which of course connects very well with the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 brand names which will be marketed heavily in 2013. This of course makes the name very likely, which means we can safely move on to speculating about the XboxPhone Via Xbox360Achievements.com ...

The Wall Street Journal reports Microsoft plans to extend its Xbox 360 subscription plan, where buyers pay $99 and then $19.99 per month for two years for an Xbox 360 and Kinect bundle, beyond its Microsoft stores to all U.S. Best Buy Co. stores and a "select" grouping of GameStop Corp. stores. The deal includes access to Xbox Live Gold (usually around $60 per year). Microsoft still considers the scheme a pilot, noting that consumers have responded well so far. While many feel the deal is all about supporting “soft” Xbox sales as the current generation comes to an end, Lewis Ward, an analyst at IDC, speculates that it is all about preparing customers for the same deal next year, when the next version of the Xbox console is expected to be announced. Microsoft has positioned the Xbox 360 as the premier entertainment computer, and while the current deal makes ...

Read part one here Note: From reading comments from the first part of this series, I get the sense a good number of our readers see this update as work in progress and rightly so. What I have a problem with is that Microsoft had all the time since they announced the features earlier in the year so I expected a more polished product than what we got. What I’m also afraid of is that since they typically only release two major dashboard updates a year, a lot of the usability problems will take a long time before they are fixed. Lastly why did accessing the content users already own like movies, music and pictures not get a UI update to match the rest of the system? For a device geared for multimedia consumption, users will find out that their local content stored on media servers or other computers are ...

Disclaimer: This is an opinion piece, the thoughts of one person that may differ from yours. The much anticipated Xbox Live fall update is upon us and most of the early reviews conclude that the experience will be a game changer. I tried to read and watch as many videos reviews as possible and last night, I installed the update to experience first hand if the hype matched the reality. I really wanted to like it but in the end, I felt let down. I am puzzled by the rave reviews from even some of Microsoft’s most ardent critics. Its ironic how the one instance that I think they should have been bashed a little for, they got accolades instead. I’ll start with a little background. For all the technical abilities and knowledge I have acquired over the years, I never was blessed with fast thumbs or the abstract thinking ...

During the month of November, Xbox 360 held four of the top 10 console game titles including: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3,” “Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” “Assassin’s Creed: Revelations” and “Battlefield 3”. The race now turns to December, the only month Microsoft did not hold the top spot in the last 17 months, losing narrowly to the Wii.  I suspect there will be no contest ...
