Popular Mechanics each year gives this honors to year’s most innovative and transformative products. Here’s what they told about Xbox One, Some products are evolutionary, others are revolutionary. Toy“R”Us is a leading retailer, in the US, for children’s toys and other juvenile products.  They posted a video demoing the Xbox One in order to inform their customers (mothers, young children, etc) about the product.  This was part of the company’s annual “Fabulous 15” list of recommendations for the holiday season.     Sony fanboys, angry that the PS4 did not make the list, quickly resorted to posting comments on the youtube video which are simply to vile to repost here.  This is especially unfortunate given the intended audience of the video.  The company did eventually disable comments but not before racist & sexist remarks, profane comments, and excessive thumbs down votes were given to the video.  Ultimately a decision was made to remove the video.  Sony declined to comment.  Microsoft was not immediately available for comment. I think Playstation is going to seriously regret not bundling their version of Kinect with the PS4.  Maybe they knew it would not be as good as Kinect 2.0 anyways. Cyrus Bamji, Microsoft partner hardware architect for Microsoft’s Silicon Valley-based Architecture and Silicon Management group, and members of his team were trying to incorporate a time-of-flight camera into Xbox One.  A time-of-flight camera emits light signals and then measures how long it takes them to return. That needs to be accurate to 1/10,000,000,000 of a second; the speed of light. With such measurements, the camera is able to differentiate light reflecting from objects in a room and the surrounding environment. That provides an accurate depth estimation that enables the shape of those objects to be computed. That speed-of-light capability would be a major advancement for the Kinect sensor portion of Xbox One, being released to 13 launch markets next month. ...

Microsoft’s senior director of product management and planning at Xbox, Albert Panello confirmed that Xbox One should be used only horizontally. “We don’t support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk,” he said. “It wouldn’t be a cooling problem, we just didn’t design the drive for vertical. Because it’s a slot loading drive, we just didn’t design it for both.” “we found…that 80 percent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox 360 horizontally.” The rest 20% of the people who use their console vertically might find it annoying with Xbox One.
