Unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few years I’m sure you are well aware of the popular HBO tv show Game of Thrones.  HBO is typically available as a premium subscription on top of a traditional cable tv subscription. Most subscribers also get access to HBO GO, which allows them to watch content on the web and through HBO GO apps.  Viewer demand caused the service to crash Sunday night during the season 4 premiere of Game of Thrones. Over 6.6 million people tuned in, making it the largest viewership for HBO since since The Sopranos series finale in 2007.  Last month, HBO Go was also overwhelmed and became largely unusable during the season finale of True Detective. Microsoft today launched the Xbox Video on the web. https://video.xbox.com/ will let you browse through Xbox Video Store and search your favorite videos. You can both buy and rent movies and videos from the web interface. Not only you can buy them, you can stream directly within your web browser. The only drawback is that you won’t be able to stream the videos in HD. Microsoft is expected to release a Windows Phone app for Xbox Video service in the coming weeks. Microsoft yesterday sent out email to customers notifying that Zune Marketplace will no longer support rental and purchase of content starting Nov 22nd. Zune Marketplace had millions of songs, videos, podcasts, and TV shows for purchase and rental and it was available across Windows Phone 7 devices, PC, Xbox and the web. Since Microsoft has transitioned to the new Xbox entertainment services like Xbox Music and Xbox Video, Zune Marketplace will shutdown on Nov 22nd. The previous update for Xbox Video app brought in some under the hood improvements and the ability to download videos while using other apps.
