Top Skype Executive Departs Microsoft

All Things D reports that corporate VP for Skype & Lync Mark Gillet is leaving Microsoft for an unspecified company.

Gillett, who is responsible for Skype’s product, engineering and operations worldwide, has been with the online telephony company for several years, including before Microsoft bought it. Previous to that, he worked at private equity giant Silver Lake in Europe.

Now this may be notable because it may mean Tony Bates could be out of the running for CEO.

Not sure Bates was ever a serious contender for CEO. But if he is, this wouldn’t effect it.

I don’t follow .. how do you see this departure connected with Tony Bates consideration for ceo?

Probably should have explained. New CEO will often promote his lieutenants to poisitions of greater power and encourage people they like to stay with the company. Bates and Gillett worked closely together on Skype before the Microsoft acquisition. Gillett leaving could be a sign that he doesn’t believe Bates will get the job.

Considering how hard it is to configure Lync in Enterprise and how slowly Skype has been developed for WP and RT, and how few innovation there has been lately, I cant see why this would be a bad thing.

“…and how slowly Skype has been developed for WP…”, is right on!
