Windows 8 SKUs Revealed, 3 New SKUs From Windows 7

11

Windows 8 will have more SKUs (Stock Keeping Units) than Windows 7. Thanks to people at  Windows 8 beta who  revealed the list of SKUs from registry entries of Windows 8.

  • Windows 8 Enterprise Edition
  • Windows 8 Enterprise Eval edition
  • Windows 8 Home Basic Edition
  • Windows 8 Home Premium edition
  • Windows 8 ARM edition
  • Windows 8 Professional edition
  • Windows 8 Professional Plus edition
  • Windows 8 Starter edition
  • Windows 8 Ultimate edition

This SKU list is longer than the Windows 7 SKUs which are just 6 in number. Microsoft may still change the SKU options during the release period later this year, but for now assume Windows 8 will come in 9 different versions ! !

Windows 8 Enterprise Eval edition doens’t sound like a definitive SKU.. more or less like Prerelase and PrerelaseARM editions..

Eval is clearly Evaluation – meaning trial version. So it does not count.

The only new additions are ARM edition (no surprise here) and Professional Plus.

I think Paul Thurrot said a few weeks ago, that Windows 8 will only have 3 SKUs. One simply called “Windows 8″, one Professional and one Enterprise. Plus the ARM-version(s). Not sure if this was speculation though.
But I don´t think there will be 9 versions, because Microsoft is just testing now.

I hope you and Paul are right. This many SKU’s (not including the eval) is just plain full out crazy.

If they want to argue that they need several versions, fine. They really only need enterprise, home premium, professional, ARM, & basic (think third world). That is it. The other ones are not necessary at all.

Microsoft, if you do this, you are stupid. There should only be ONE version of Windows 8. ONE.

Don’t you know what is called.  Windows *EIGHT*.  That means eight versions!  We had Windows ONE back in 1985.  ;)
