There has been some talk of a dedicated 7 inch Xbox Surface tablet.

Aaron Toulmin has proven that that would just be wasteful, hooking up his Surface RT via HDMI to a 100” projector and playing Riptide using a wireless 360 controller.

The setup worked beautifully, which does raise a question of why Microsoft needs to create another platform, ecosystem and device when the current Surface has all the bits already?

    Seems clear to me. Surface is not powerful enough for (real) gaming.

    too many barriers to fool proof gaming. one, you have to plug in the surface every time (both power and display) then you have to fiddle with the Xbox controller dongle whatever. Then you have to launch the game from the Surface (apparently I didn’t see him do it via the controller) This is where consoles will ALWAYS win because you just turn them off and on like an appliance and things “just work”

      Sure, because MS intended you to use the Surface exactly like that, it should “just work”, bastards all of them! /sarcasm
      You have to connect it every time? Really, how about you take that Xbox/PS3 around with you to lets say the coffee shop and read a book or type up some thing, It’s not about comparing it as a gaming console…
      I think the important thing here is just to show how versatile and what you can accomplish with the Surface (I think it’s the articles title that make it seem less than it really is).

        versitile yes, but we should not think this thing can be put forward as a primary gaming device. The tablet portion of the next Xbox will be a fit for purpose device that is essentially married to the Xbox and “just works”. In fact, if they cull off the Desktop and really just run a Win8 shell that displays the Start screen and allows a subset of Store apps I wouldn’t be surprised one bit.

          I think in your fixation on the tile and the video, you may be missing the point; In that Surface users Won’t Need to purchase another tablet to use with the next Xbox (if it came in a bundle), as they would just be able to use their current tablet!

            Yes they will, because the connection between the new base unit and the xbox tablet will be so proprietary in nature that you can’t just bring any ole tablet to the show. The Xbox isn’t due out for a while, and I’d hate to think they would stay on hardware from 2012.

    It seems very obvious yo me that having a dedicated 7 inch gaming device has 3 main advantages (at least) over the surface. First it will be cheaper, secondly it will bemore powerful and thirdly it will most likely have the control buttons embedded in the device itself aliminating the need for a controler. Furthermore it will be lighter and even easier to carry around. That said Surface Pro will probaly be quite awesome for gaming depending on which graphics card it will have.

      Everybody seems to have missed the real point here: try to do things like this with iPad or Android tablet. And we are talking RT device here. Pro versions are even more capable. And in theory if WP8 really is the same OS deep down this should be possible even with Lumia 920, with simple games of course.

    I thought Surface only worked with wired controller. How do you pair a wireless controller to the Surface? Via bluetoothe directly or dongle?

      its by a usb dongle that connects tto the wirrels contoler i have one on my desktop

      so i supose its the same
